Deterioration of Internet Services in Pakistan Over Recent Years

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]During a recent meeting, the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication expressed its concerns about the worsening state of internet and voice services in Pakistan over the past five years. Members of the committee noted that despite cellular companies collecting full charges, the quality of internet and voice services has deteriorated across the country, even affecting important locations like the Parliament Lodges.

kLawmaker Naz Baloch highlighted that Pakistan’s internet services and connectivity are among the poorest in the region, describing the situation as “pathetic.”

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) representative Dr. Khawar Siddique Khokhar acknowledged that telecom operators face numerous challenges, including high taxation, restrictions on LCs (Letter of Credits), load-shedding, high fuel prices, and low average revenue per user (ARPU). He emphasized the need for increased investment, addressing taxation issues, and improving ARPU to attract telecom sector investment.

Ministry officials and the CEO of the Universal Service Fund mentioned that steps are being taken to address the situation, including easing LC opening procedures and anticipating improvements in service quality in the coming months. The committee was also informed about a high-level committee formed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to propose amendments and recommendations to enhance legislation related to cybercrimes.
