China, Russia, and Iran Hold Trilateral Talks on Nuclear Programme

Senior diplomats from China, Russia, and Iran met on Friday to discuss Tehran’s nuclear programme, according to Chinese state media, as efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement remain in limbo. The meeting involved China’s Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, and Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.

The discussions, which included views on Iran’s nuclear situation and other regional issues, have yet to yield further disclosed details. The talks come as international uncertainty over the future of Iran’s nuclear ambitions continues to grow.

The 2015 nuclear deal, or JCPOA, placed limits on Tehran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. However, former US President Donald Trump’s 2018 withdrawal from the deal led Iran to backtrack on its commitments, stalling any attempts to renew the agreement.

China has called for diplomatic engagement, emphasizing the need for dialogue and negotiation to resume quickly. Both Russia and China maintain strong ties with Iran, supporting a diplomatic approach to the nuclear impasse.
