OpenAI’s widely used chatbot, ChatGPT, faced major disruptions on June 10 due to a partial system outage that also impacted its video tool, Sora, and developer API.
The issues began early Tuesday, with Downdetector reporting a surge in complaints shortly after 5:30 a.m. Around 2,000 users reported problems at the peak of the outage. OpenAI quickly confirmed the disruption and launched an investigation.

By midday, the company noted gradual recovery across ChatGPT and its API services, though full restoration was expected to take several more hours. Service access fluctuated throughout the day.
On X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI addressed the situation, citing “elevated error rates and latency,” and assured users that the underlying problem had been identified.
“We’re working urgently to restore full service,” the company stated.
The outage highlighted how deeply integrated ChatGPT has become in daily routines. HR Dive data shows workplace usage has doubled over the past year, while Pew Research reported that over a quarter of U.S. teenagers now use ChatGPT for schoolwork—twice the number from 2023.
This disruption adds to a string of recent outages affecting major tech platforms like Zoom and X, emphasizing the growing challenges in maintaining digital service reliability.
OpenAI’s engineers worked overnight to fully stabilize operations. By early June 11, the company reported that most services were back to normal, though voice mode continued to experience elevated error rates.
