The CDA has announced plans for a modern rail service connecting Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The new train is expected to be the first eco-friendly commuter service in the twin cities, likely operating as an electric vehicle (EV) train.
A key meeting on the project was held at CDA Headquarters on Wednesday. It was chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhwa, with senior officials from Pakistan Railways and the CDA in attendance. The discussion focused on the train’s layout, business model, and the use of green technology.
During the meeting, the CDA confirmed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pakistan Railways will soon be signed to launch the service. The train aims to provide safe, affordable, and comfortable travel for commuters while reducing traffic congestion in both cities.
Randhwa highlighted that the project will follow all regulations necessary to integrate carbon credits, making it a sustainable and environmentally responsible initiative. He also mentioned plans to expand the service to other areas of Islamabad using the existing railway network.
The project will include feeder electric buses linking passengers to the Margalla Railway Station, ensuring smooth connectivity between different modes of transport. The CDA emphasized that the project will adhere to international standards and best practices.
Officials believe the train service will significantly modernize urban transport and contribute to Islamabad’s overall development. The CDA aims to enhance commuter convenience, promote sustainable travel, and reduce urban traffic pressures.
The meeting was attended by CDA Board Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza, Member Planning and Design Dr. Khalid Hafiz, and other senior officials from both CDA and Pakistan Railways. The project reflects CDA’s commitment to innovative, eco-friendly, and sustainable infrastructure in the twin cities.
