British Spies Use Dark Web To Recruit Russian Agents And Access Secrets

British intelligence is now using the dark web to recruit agents and access secret information worldwide. The UK Foreign Ministry announced the plan on Thursday.

The Secret Intelligence Service, known as MI6, will operate a dark web portal called Silent Courier. This platform allows individuals to securely share intelligence on illegal activities or offer their own services anonymously.

MI6 chief Richard Moore will formally unveil the initiative in Istanbul on Friday. “We are asking anyone with sensitive information on global threats, terrorism, or hostile state intelligence to contact MI6 securely online,” Moore said.

He added, “Our virtual door is open to you,” reiterating a call for Russians and others to provide intelligence for Britain.

Founded in 1909, MI6 traditionally relied on face-to-face meetings for operations. The agency’s shift to the dark web marks a significant change, embracing digital tools to maintain secrecy and reach global informants. The dark web is known for anonymity and is often used by criminals, terrorists, and other illicit networks.

A promotional video explains how Silent Courier works. Instructions for using the portal will also be available on MI6’s YouTube channel.

Foreign Minister Yvette Copper described the move as a step to strengthen national security. “The world is changing, and threats are growing. We must ensure British intelligence stays one step ahead,” she said.

The announcement comes as Moore prepares to step down after five years as MI6 chief. He will be succeeded by Blaise Metreweli, MI6’s first female head.

The British government’s new dark web initiative signals a blend of traditional espionage and digital innovation. MI6 aims to recruit agents from Russia and across the globe, keeping the UK prepared against emerging threats.
