The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) was struck by tragedy on Saturday when Dhaka Capitals’ assistant coach, Mahbub Ali Zaki, collapsed shortly before the team’s scheduled BPL match against Rajshahi Warriors in Sylhet and later passed away.
The incident occurred during pre-match preparations, around 20 minutes before the start of play in the BPL, as players from both teams were warming up near the dressing room area. According to officials, Zaki suddenly felt unwell and collapsed, prompting an immediate emergency response from medical staff present at the venue.
On-site medical personnel quickly administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an effort to stabilize him before he was rushed to Al Haramain Hospital in Sylhet. Doctors provided intensive medical care, and he was admitted to the intensive care unit. Despite all efforts, the experienced coach could not be saved and was later pronounced dead. Medical sources confirmed that he suffered a heart attack.
Mahbub Ali Zaki was a respected figure in Bangladesh’s domestic cricket system and had been actively involved in coaching within the BPL. His sudden death sent shockwaves through the cricketing community, with players, officials, and fans expressing deep grief over the unexpected loss.
The Dhaka Capitals confirmed the tragic news in an official statement shared on social media, describing his passing as an irreparable loss. The franchise extended heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones and offered prayers for his departed soul.
The incident has cast a somber shadow over the ongoing BPL, which has already faced several off-field challenges. Earlier in the tournament, the Noakhali Express coaching staff briefly walked out of a training session over concerns regarding facilities before returning following discussions with officials.
