US President Joe Biden is preparing to propose a major overhaul of the Supreme Court in the coming week, which would include term limits for justices and an enforceable ethics code, according to a report by the Washington Post. This plan may also involve calling for a constitutional amendment to eliminate broad presidential immunity.
During a recent call with the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Biden mentioned there would be some form of Supreme Court reform that he plans to unveil or seek, although he did not provide specific details. Previously, Biden had resisted calls to implement term limits or expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court. Such reforms have been suggested by some Democrats, particularly following former President Donald Trump’s appointment of three conservative justices. Any reform would require Congressional approval.

Trump, who is set to formally accept the Republican Party’s presidential nomination soon, will face Biden in the upcoming November 5 election, mirroring the 2020 contest. In October, a bipartisan group of legal experts voiced support for 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices, suggesting that this change could help reduce partisanship and enhance the judiciary’s reputation.
