Basant Set to Fly Again in Lahore This February (1)

Basant is officially returning to Lahore after a long break, following conditional approval from the district administration. The decision allows kite flying under strict safety measures to protect the public.

Deputy Commissioner Syed Musa Raza issued an official notification announcing that Basant will be celebrated on February 6, 7, and 8, 2026. The celebrations will be limited strictly to the Lahore district.

The deputy commissioner described Basant as a cultural tradition of Lahore. He said public safety and discipline must remain the top priority during the festival.

Conditional approval for kite flying

Authorities have allowed kite flying only on the approved dates. Kite flying outside February 6 to 8 will not be permitted under any circumstances. A zero-tolerance policy has been adopted against unsafe practices.

Officials said previous incidents linked to dangerous kite strings led to strict controls. The administration aims to prevent injuries and fatalities during Basant.

The district administration has allowed Basant-related businesses to begin operations from December 30. However, the sale of kites and equipment will only be allowed from February 1 to February 8, 2026.

All manufacturers and sellers must complete mandatory digital registration. No business will be allowed to operate without approval. To manage the process, the administration has launched the E-Biz app and an online registration portal.

Officials said digital registration will help ensure transparency and accountability. Unauthorized manufacturing or selling will result in legal action.

The administration has imposed a complete ban on making and selling spinning wheels. Kite string will only be allowed in approved pinna form.

The use of nylon, plastic, metal wire, chemically coated thread, or bloody string has been strictly prohibited. Authorities warned that such materials pose serious risks to public safety.

Police and district officers have been directed to take immediate action against violators. Any breach of rules related to kite size, string material, or illegal sales will lead to prosecution.

Safety measures for the public

For public safety, motorcyclists must install safety wires on their bikes during Basant. Kite sizes and string lengths must stay within approved limits.

Standard Operating Procedures have been issued for officials, police, kite flying associations, manufacturers, sellers, and citizens.

Deputy Commissioner Musa Raza said Safe Basant has been restored. He emphasized that no compromise will be made on enforcement.
