Bangladesh has formally requested Interpol to issue Red Corner Notices against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 12 of her top associates, signaling a major development in the country’s ongoing legal and political reckoning. The request was filed by the National Central Bureau of Bangladesh Police following orders from the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).
The charges are serious, with police citing “crimes against humanity and genocide” as the basis for the appeal. The 77-year-old former leader fled to India on August 5, 2024, amid massive protests that toppled her 16-year rule under the Awami League. She has since remained in exile, while the interim government under Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus accelerates efforts to bring her to justice.

Assistant Inspector General Enamul Haque Sagor confirmed the Red Notice request, explaining that such actions are taken only after judicial review and substantiated evidence. While a Red Notice is not an arrest warrant, it acts as a powerful international tool to locate and provisionally arrest individuals pending extradition.
The list of accused includes former ministers, advisers, and high-ranking officials, many of whom are also believed to be residing abroad. The Bangladeshi government has hinted at further diplomatic steps to secure their return if Interpol responds favorably.
This unprecedented move underscores a growing political crisis in Bangladesh, as the interim administration intensifies its campaign for justice and international accountability.
