BAIC Unveil The New Generation BJ40 with Modern Upgrades and Bold Design

The BAIC’s BJ40 second generation has finally been shown. The off-road body-on-frame SUV features modern technologies such as a double screen in the interior, LED lights, self-driving capability, and so on.

The first-generation BJ40 is a body-on-frame SUV that is still sold in China and other parts of the world.

The outward design of the first generation BJ40 is reminiscent of the Jeep Wrangler, which is not surprising given BAIC’s previous BJ80 SUV, a clone of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The BJ40 was one of the first indigenous SUVs to gain popularity in China. However, it desperately required a new generation, and here it is.

The BAIC BJ40’s second generation borrows the brand’s current design language from the BJ60, a full-sized SUV that went on sale last year. It now has an LED grille and rectangular headlights, and it is no longer a Jeep Wrangler knockoff.

The blocky proportions and high bonnet line of the second generation are retained. Frameless doors, enormous side-view mirrors, massive bumpers, and a lot of plastic trim in the lower body are also features. Another intriguing element is the two-piece tailboard. A swing-out tailboard with a spare wheel is standard as well.

Inside, the new BJ40 is BAIC’s most sophisticated SUV. In front of the digital instrument display is a three-spoke circular steering wheel inspired by the BJ60. The main feature of the BJ40 is a twin screen ‘floating’ above the central console.

The first monitor is the driver’s centre control touch screen. The second is for the front seat passenger. Although the screen sizes are not yet known, they appear to be enormous.

Under the displays are the climate control vents. A wireless charging pad, buttons, a retractable gear selector, and cup holders are located in the central tunnel. The new BJ40, like the original model, has a five-seat interior.

It also features a HYCET 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 245 horsepower and 385 Nm of torque. In normal mode, power is routed to the rear wheels via an eight-speed ZF torque converter automatic gearbox. A part-time four-wheel drive system with a locking differential is used in the drivetrain.

The new BJ40 will go on sale in China on August 25 at the Chengdu Auto Show. The pricing and other data are currently unclear. However, reports claim that it will cost between Rs. 8 million and Rs. 12 million.
