Adar Poonawalla Acquires 50% Stake in Dharma Productions

Billionaire Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India, has acquired a 50% stake in Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Dharmatic Entertainment for $120 million, announced on October 21. The deal values the production company at $120 million, with Johar retaining the remaining 50% and staying as Executive Chairman. Apoorva Mehta continues as CEO.

Poonawalla’s investment, made through Serene Productions, marks his entry into entertainment following Dharma’s discussions with companies like Saregama, Reliance, and Jio Cinema. His backing aims to help Dharma expand its digital and global reach.

Both Poonawalla and Johar expressed excitement over the partnership. Poonawalla called Dharma iconic, while Johar highlighted the blend of storytelling and business strategy. Johar believes the deal will help Dharma further its global content ambitions.

Celebrating 44 years since its founding by Yash Johar in 1976, Dharma has produced major Bollywood hits like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Brahmāstra.
