Are Margalla Hills Really Getting Snowfall PMD Sets Record Straight

Social media users have recently circulated rumors predicting snowfall on Islamabad’s Margalla Hills, specifically at the highest peak, Tilla Chruni, between the night of December 31, 2025, and the morning of January 2, 2026.

The claims suggested that a thunderstorm could bring heavy hail or wet snow, resulting in a sharp drop in temperatures. Tilla Chruni, part of the Margalla Hills National Park, stands at approximately 1,604 meters (5,262 feet) above sea level and is a popular spot for hikers and nature enthusiasts.

However, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has dismissed these reports as mere speculation. Officials confirmed that no snowfall is expected in the Margalla Hills during the upcoming days.

According to the PMD, the minimum surface temperature is currently around 3°C, while snowfall generally requires temperatures at or below freezing (0°C). Conditions in the area are not favorable for snow, making the rumors inaccurate.

Authorities have advised residents and visitors to rely on official weather updates rather than unverified social media posts. Winter conditions in the Margalla Hills can change rapidly, so following accurate forecasts is essential for safety.

Hikers and tourists planning trips to the hills over the New Year are encouraged to take normal winter precautions. Wearing warm clothing and monitoring official weather forecasts are recommended, as temperatures can still drop significantly at higher altitudes like Tilla Chruni.

The PMD emphasized that speculation about extreme weather events often spreads online. Officials urged the public to avoid relying on rumors and to check trusted sources for accurate information.
