A large crowd gathered at Garhi Khuda Baksh today to mark the 18th anniversary of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto’s martyrdom. Leaders and workers of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) from across the country attended the commemoration.
The event featured floral tributes, prayers, and reflections on Shaheed Benazir Bhutto’s life and sacrifices. President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari arrived in Naudero, where Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah welcomed them. Both addressed the public gathering to honor her legacy.
Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan’s first female prime minister, led the country from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996. She was the first woman to democratically lead a Muslim-majority nation. President Zardari praised her unwavering commitment to democracy, tolerance, and inclusion, calling her life inseparable from Pakistan’s democratic journey.
“Shaheed Benazir Bhutto gave voice to the voiceless,” President Zardari said. “She worked for farmers, workers, and low-income families, focusing on education, livelihoods, and youth opportunities.” He highlighted her courage in confronting extremism and noted that her martyrdom remains a symbol of resistance against violence and intolerance.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari described her life as a rare combination of courage and compassion. He said her vision of a democratic, inclusive, and peaceful Pakistan continues to inspire generations, especially women and youth. Bilawal reaffirmed the PPP’s commitment to her mission, including social justice, women’s empowerment, and minority protection.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also paid tribute, calling Shaheed Benazir Bhutto a beacon of hope, perseverance, and democracy. He highlighted her focus on empowering marginalized communities and strengthening Pakistan’s democratic institutions.
A government delegation, including Rana Sanaullah, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, attended the anniversary and met with PPP leadership.
