Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi announced that Pakistan Railways will install cameras inside trains to improve passenger safety and monitoring. This step is part of a broader modernization plan across the national railway system.
While addressing the media, Abbasi said that Pakistan Railways generated over Rs. 93 billion in revenue in 2025. He added that Rs. 50 billion is expected in the first half of the fiscal year 2025–26. By the end of the year, the department is projected to cross the Rs. 1 trillion revenue milestone for the first time.
The minister highlighted that the Safety Department has been upgraded to a directorate, which has led to a significant reduction in accidents. The accident rate fell from 0.09 percent to 0.04 percent, and no serious railway accident has occurred since the directorate was established.
Abbasi also shared that Rawalpindi has become Pakistan’s first smart railway station, featuring cameras and an advanced security system. Other major stations will be upgraded in 2026 under the smart station project, and cameras will also be installed inside trains to further enhance security.
He added that eight train rakes, including Shalimar, Pak Business, Lasani, and Faiz Ahmed Faiz, were upgraded within eight months. All trains are expected to be fully modernized by December 2026.
The minister noted that Pakistan Railways operations have been digitized, staff attendance computerized, and station facilities improved. Major stations now include ATMs, ticket vending machines, and POS systems to provide better convenience for passengers.
