Murree issues red alert as tourists expected this weekend

Murree, Pakistan’s most popular hill station, continues to attract large numbers of tourists as authorities impose a Code Red alert ahead of expected heavy snowfall. Despite the warning, visitors are eager to enjoy the winter season, with forecasts predicting rain in Rawalpindi and Islamabad and snowfall across Murree and nearby hilly areas over the weekend.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned of intense weather conditions, prompting local authorities to declare a full emergency in Murree to ensure the safety of residents and tourists. Officials have advised travelers to remain cautious, follow traffic rules, and stay informed as the town prepares for challenging winter conditions.

Weather officials have also cautioned about landslides and dangerous road conditions in several northern regions, including Naran, Kaghan, Swat, Chitral, Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Murree, Galliyat, Neelum Valley, and parts of Kashmir on December 21. A westerly weather system is expected to bring rain and snowfall to Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Islamabad, and the Potohar region, while fog and smog may affect eastern Punjab and northern Sindh.

Murree Deputy Commissioner Agha Zaheer Shirazi said the administration is fully prepared. Main roads have been cleared, and snow-clearing machinery has been arranged with support from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority. Traffic police have been deployed to manage vehicle flow, while sanitation teams are working to prevent water buildup.

Health facilities have stocked essential medicines, and Rescue 1122 along with Civil Defence teams remain on high alert. Under the Code Red emergency plan, trained rescue staff, ambulances, fire vehicles, and rescue bikes have been stationed at key roads and tourist areas to respond quickly to any emergency.
