The PTA has blocked more than 1.838 million illegal SIMs during the first seven months of 2026 as part of a nationwide campaign against unauthorized mobile connections. The operation aims to improve telecom security, prevent fraud, and stop the misuse of mobile services across Pakistan.
The crackdown is being carried out jointly by the PTA and the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA). Both organizations are working together to strengthen the SIM registration system and reduce telecom-related crimes. Officials say the campaign is part of broader efforts to ensure that mobile connections are issued only through valid identity documents.
According to official data, the PTA blocked 691,102 illegal SIMs between January and July 2026. These SIMs were identified during ongoing enforcement activities against unauthorized mobile connections. Authorities say removing these SIMs from the network will help reduce illegal telecom activities.
The authority also disconnected 903,230 SIMs that were registered under the Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) of deceased individuals. Officials explained that repeated warnings had been issued before these SIMs were permanently blocked. The action was taken to prevent the misuse of identity records belonging to people who had passed away.
In another major step, the PTA blocked 244,357 SIMs linked to cancelled or expired CNICs. Authorities say this measure will stop individuals from obtaining or using mobile services through invalid identity documents. The move is expected to improve the overall accuracy of Pakistan’s SIM registration database.
Officials believe proper verification of mobile connections is essential for public safety. Illegal SIMs are often linked to fraud, cybercrime, financial scams, and other unlawful activities. By removing unauthorized connections, the government hopes to strengthen security and improve confidence in the telecom system.
The campaign is not limited to domestic SIMs. The PTA and NCCIA are also taking action against the illegal sale and distribution of foreign SIM cards. As part of this effort, authorities carried out 25 raids in Islamabad and several other locations across the country.
During these operations, officials recovered 8,051 foreign SIM cards that were allegedly being sold without authorization. Law enforcement agencies also arrested 37 suspects believed to be involved in illegal SIM trading. Investigations are continuing to identify additional individuals and networks connected to these activities.
The authorities say unauthorized foreign SIM cards can create security risks because they may be used without proper registration or verification. Preventing their illegal distribution is considered an important part of strengthening Pakistan’s telecom regulatory framework.
The PTA has confirmed that the nationwide crackdown will continue in the coming months. Officials have warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone involved in the illegal sale, activation, distribution, or misuse of SIM cards.
The authority has also advised mobile users to ensure that all SIMs registered under their names are valid and properly documented. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious telecom activities and avoid purchasing SIM cards from unauthorized sources.
