Pakistan Can-Maker Plans $110 Million Manufacturing Facility In Afghanistan

Pakistan Aluminium Beverage Cans Limited (PABC) has announced plans to set up a new beverage can manufacturing facility in Afghanistan. The project, valued at $110 million, will have an annual capacity of 1.3 billion cans. The company shared the update in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX).

The development comes as part of PABC’s strategic roadmap. The company stated that the project is subject to regulatory and customary approvals. The Board of Directors had initially approved the initiative on October 30, 2025, highlighting PABC’s long-term expansion strategy in regional markets.

The announcement follows tense Pakistan-Afghanistan relations in recent months. Islamabad has urged the Afghan Taliban administration to act against militants operating from Afghan territory. Border closures and trade disruptions have raised concerns over sales and operational efficiency for companies like PABC, which rely on cross-border trade.

In addition to the new manufacturing facility, PABC’s Board has approved acquiring 60% of the units of Alfalah Agri-Cultivation Fund – I from Liberty Mills Limited. The investment, worth Rs621 million, targets modern, mechanized, and sustainable farming projects in Pakistan. It includes an investment in Terra Crop Innovations (Pvt) Ltd in the Cholistan Desert, aimed at boosting food security, supporting agricultural exports, and reducing import dependency.

The company confirmed that the acquisition is subject to standard procedures and authorized its representatives to take all necessary actions for implementation.

With the Afghanistan facility, PABC aims to strengthen its regional manufacturing presence while balancing growth and geopolitical risks. These moves underline how companies in Pakistan are seeking to expand into neighboring markets while supporting domestic agricultural and industrial development.
