PM Shehbaz’s 100MW Solar Push Sparks Big Expectations

PM Shehbaz on Monday approved the immediate launch of a 100-megawatt solar project to improve electricity supply in Gwadar and Gilgit Baltistan. He said the project is important for ensuring affordable and uninterrupted power as the government works on wider energy sector reforms.

During a detailed briefing on electricity issues, PM Shehbaz directed all concerned institutions to work together. He said reliable power for Gwadar Port City is essential for economic activity and future investment. He added that strong coordination is necessary to overcome long-standing challenges in the region.

The prime minister also ordered an urgent start to the 100MW solar project in Gilgit Baltistan. He said the welfare and development of GB’s people is a top priority for the federal government. He stressed that the new project must deliver clean and environmentally friendly energy.

Officials briefed the meeting that a committee led by Ahsan Iqbal, along with the Ministry of Energy, had prepared a complete plan addressing immediate, short-term and long-term needs. PM Shehbaz appreciated their work and instructed authorities to begin implementation without delay.

Energy Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari told the meeting that recent steps have reduced power disruptions in Gwadar by 42 percent. He said a plan is in place to stabilize voltage levels within six months. New measures will help provide reliable power for domestic and commercial consumers.

Short-term actions include installing 9.7 megawatts of solar systems on major government buildings within the next eight to twelve months. Long-term plans include a 40-megawatt project designed to support Gwadar’s future energy requirements.

Officials also noted that electricity demand in Gwadar is expected to grow by 30 percent in the coming years. They said the rise is linked to industrial development, port expansion and rapid urban growth. The new solar initiatives aim to meet this demand while strengthening the region’s energy stability.
