Pakistan And Afghanistan Exchange Heavy Fire Along Border Areas

Pakistan and Afghanistan exchanged heavy fire along their border late on Friday, officials from both countries confirmed. The clashes came amid heightened tensions following failed peace talks earlier this week.

No immediate reports of casualties were received. Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed that Pakistani forces attacked Spin Boldak district in Kandahar province. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Pakistan’s Prime Minister accused Afghan forces of “unprovoked firing” along the Chaman border.

“Pakistan remains fully alert and committed to protecting its territory and citizens,” said Mosharraf Zaidi, a government spokesperson.

Failed Peace Talks

The exchange occurred two days after a new round of peace talks ended without a breakthrough. Both sides agreed to continue the fragile ceasefire. Recent negotiations in Saudi Arabia followed earlier meetings hosted by Qatar, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, aimed at reducing tensions after deadly border clashes in October.

Pakistan claims that Afghan-based militants have recently carried out attacks inside its territory, including suicide bombings. Kabul denies responsibility for security incidents in Pakistan. The October clashes were the worst violence on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border since the Taliban regained power in 2021, causing dozens of deaths.

Border Security and Humanitarian Aid

Pakistan’s Foreign Office rejected media reports suggesting secret talks with Kabul, stating that Islamabad had no confirmation of such meetings. The spokesperson emphasized that national security and civilian safety remain top priorities.

Regarding humanitarian aid, Pakistan plans to send a convoy to Afghanistan but cannot confirm its departure due to security and logistical concerns. Officials stressed that opening the Pakistan-Afghanistan border cannot come at the cost of civilian safety, prioritizing protection of citizens above all else.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, maintaining a strong stance on security while keeping avenues open for future dialogue and peace efforts.
