An Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court has started proclamation proceedings against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister CM Afridi in connection with a protest held on November 26. The case also involves Provincial Minister Meena Khan Afridi and Dr. Amjad.
The proceedings were initiated after repeated summons issued by the court went unheeded by the accused. Despite multiple notifications, none of the accused appeared for the hearings, prompting the court to move forward with legal measures.
Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain of the Anti-Terrorism Court is overseeing the case. Officials said proclamation proceedings are a standard legal step when accused individuals fail to respond or appear before the court. This process allows the court to continue the trial without unnecessary delays.
The November 26 protest had raised concerns over public safety and political stability in the region. Authorities said the court’s decision to begin proclamation proceedings is aimed at ensuring accountability while maintaining law and order.
Legal experts explained that proclamation proceedings serve to secure the presence of the accused in serious cases. If CM Afridi and other defendants continue to remain absent, the court can direct authorities to take additional measures, including arrest and further investigation.
The development comes amid ongoing political tensions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Officials said the court’s actions are part of broader efforts to handle politically sensitive cases efficiently and fairly.
Observers noted that the initiation of proclamation proceedings against CM Afridi underscores the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the rule of law. It also signals that political status will not exempt individuals from legal responsibilities.
