Islamabad is set to launch free public Wi-Fi services at major public locations, providing residents and visitors with easy internet access. Users will be required to verify their identity before logging in.
The National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) has finalized the standards for providing free Wi-Fi across the capital. Anyone wishing to use the service will need to enter their name and mobile phone number. A digital log will also record which user accessed the internet at specific public locations.
Authorities have emphasized that cybersecurity will be a key focus of the initiative. NTC has been instructed to ensure strict measures are in place to protect users and safeguard public networks. The identity verification process is designed to prevent misuse and maintain secure connectivity.
Wi-Fi hotspots will be installed across key areas of Islamabad, including metro bus stations, central commercial districts, and other high-traffic public spaces. NTC has already coordinated with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and other relevant departments to ensure a smooth and fast rollout.
Officials said the initiative aims to enhance digital accessibility for the public, making internet services more readily available in public spaces. They added that the program will gradually expand to cover additional areas of the city in the future.
The government hopes that free Wi-Fi in Islamabad will encourage citizens to use public spaces more efficiently while staying connected. The project also reflects broader efforts to modernize public infrastructure and improve digital services in the capital.
