Karachi Police has set December 5 as the deadline for citizens to fix or replace incorrect, fake, or unreadable number plates on cars and motorcycles. After the deadline, police will launch a citywide crackdown, seizing any vehicle found with illegal or unidentifiable plates.
Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odho has directed strict and uniform action across all areas, urging citizens to ensure their number plates meet legal standards by the deadline.
SHO Orangi Town Muhammad Yousuf Mehr told Express that police stations already conduct routine snap-checking, but from December 6 onward, every vehicle will be stopped to verify the authenticity of its plates. He said many motorists either don’t display plates or use incomplete or tampered ones—an issue that increased after the introduction of the e-challan system, as some drivers began hiding plates to avoid fines.
During checks, officers will inspect vehicle documents and verify registration, engine, and chassis numbers through the Excise Department or CPLC. Drivers’ biometric details will be checked via the Talaash App for identity and criminal records.
Stolen vehicles will lead to immediate arrest, while cars with dubious plates will be seized under Section 550 until cleared by the court. If the vehicle is legitimate but the driver has a criminal background, additional legal action will follow.
Police say the campaign aims to curb vehicle theft and improve law and order across Karachi, with strict enforcement beginning December 6.
