The district administration of Shaheed Benazirabad has announced a public holiday on November 17 to mark the 754th annual Urs of Syed Asghar Ali Shah, widely known as Sakhi Jam Datar. The decision was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner Abdul Samad Nizamani, who issued the notification on Wednesday.
The Urs of Sakhi Jam Datar is an important religious and cultural event in the Sindh region. Each year, thousands of devotees from across the province and other parts of the country travel to the shrine to pay their respects. The celebration includes traditional devotional gatherings, communal meals, recitations, and activities reflecting centuries-old Sufi spiritual heritage.
According to the district administration, all government offices, educational institutions, and local departments within Shaheed Benazirabad will remain closed on the day. However, essential services including hospitals, emergency units, and municipal response teams will be on duty to ensure smooth conduct of the gathering and to support the visiting pilgrims.
The announcement underlines the cultural significance of Sakhi Jam Datar in the region. His followers and admirers consider him a symbol of compassion, generosity, and service to humanity. The Urs attracts not only local residents but also devotees traveling in groups from various towns of Sindh, Punjab, and Balochistan.
Security arrangements for the Urs have also been discussed. Local authorities are expected to deploy law enforcement personnel to manage crowds, ensure safety, and maintain traffic flow near the shrine. Health camps and temporary guidance centers are also likely to be set up to assist visitors, especially elderly pilgrims.
The Urs of Sakhi Jam Datar is not only a religious gathering but also contributes to local economic activity. Vendors, transporters, and hospitality services witness increased movement during the event. The annual celebration serves as a reminder of Sindh’s identity rooted in Sufi traditions, tolerance, and communal unity.
In recent days, the region has also seen developments in technological and industrial sectors. For example, Pakistan recently launched its first Google Chromebook assembly line, marking a step forward in digital manufacturing and local production. Such advancements reflect the ongoing modernization taking place alongside strong cultural traditions in the country.
The Urs celebrations of Sakhi Jam Datar are scheduled to continue for several days, featuring religious gatherings, prayers, and community participation. Local authorities advise visitors to plan their travel with caution and follow instructions provided by administrative and security teams.
