Saudi Arabia Requests United States To Purchase 48 F-35 Fighter Jets

Saudi Arabia has formally requested to purchase up to 48 F-35 fighter jets from the United States, marking a major shift in regional defense policy. The potential deal could affect the Middle East’s military balance and test Washington’s commitment to maintaining Israel’s “qualitative military edge.”

The request was submitted earlier this year directly to U.S. President Donald Trump. Pentagon officials are reviewing the proposal, but no final approval has been given. The sale requires Cabinet-level review, formal presidential approval, and notification to Congress before it can proceed.

Pentagon sources said the proposal has been under evaluation for months and has now reached the secretary-level stage within the Defense Department. Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of the F-35, confirmed that all sales are conducted through government-to-government channels.

The F-35 is a fifth-generation stealth fighter, capable of evading radar and conducting advanced operations. Israel is the only Middle Eastern country currently operating the F-35, maintaining multiple squadrons built over the last decade.

Saudi Arabia’s air force currently operates Boeing F-15s, Tornado, and Typhoon jets. The country aims to modernize its military and strengthen defenses against regional threats, particularly from Iran. The proposed purchase aligns with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030, which emphasizes military modernization and stronger ties with the United States.

The Trump administration has previously supported increased defense cooperation with Riyadh, highlighted by a $142 billion arms package, the largest in U.S. history. However, any F-35 sale could face congressional scrutiny due to past concerns over human rights and the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Experts say the sale would significantly advance Saudi Arabia’s defense capabilities while strengthening strategic relations with the United States. Analysts note that the deal reflects Riyadh’s ongoing ambition to secure advanced military technology and maintain regional security.
