The Government has suspended the foreign postings of nine trade officers after receiving reports from intelligence agencies, reliable sources confirmed. The decision affects several key international trade missions where these officers were supposed to take charge in the coming weeks.
According to sources, the officers were selected for postings in Athens, London, Geneva, Brussels, Bangkok, and Frankfurt. However, the Government decided to halt the appointments following concerns raised by intelligence departments about certain individuals.
The officers belong to the Pakistan Customs Service, Inland Revenue Service, and the Commerce & Trade Group. Those affected include Fahad Chaudhry, Fawad Ali Shah, Ali Waheed, Asim Rehman, Dr. Irfan, Suleman Khan, and Aisam Khokhar, among others.
The Ministry of Commerce has instructed officers already serving in foreign missions to continue their duties until new appointments are finalized. This move ensures that Pakistan’s trade operations abroad remain unaffected during the review process.
The Government had earlier conducted a detailed selection process in collaboration with LUMS University to appoint qualified and skilled candidates for international positions. The initiative aimed to strengthen Pakistan’s global trade representation and improve coordination with key markets.
However, after the intelligence reports surfaced, the Government decided to reassess the entire list to maintain transparency and uphold national interests. Officials stated that the decision reflects a broader commitment to accountability and merit in foreign postings.
The suspension highlights the Government’s cautious approach toward sensitive international appointments. It also underscores efforts to ensure that only deserving and vetted officers represent Pakistan in critical trade roles abroad.
