Peru Breaks Off Diplomatic Ties with Mexico Over Asylum Dispute

Peru has officially severed diplomatic relations with Mexico following a growing dispute over political asylum granted to members of Peru’s former government. The decision marks a serious escalation in tensions between the two Latin American nations.

The Peruvian Foreign Ministry announced the move late Monday, accusing Mexico of “interference” in its internal affairs after the Mexican government granted asylum to former officials linked to ousted president Pedro Castillo. Lima said the action violated international norms of non-intervention.

Mexico’s foreign ministry responded by expressing “deep regret” over Peru’s decision, stating that it acted strictly under humanitarian principles. It reaffirmed its position that offering asylum is a sovereign right under international law.

The diplomatic rift has led to the closure of Peru’s embassy in Mexico City, with diplomatic staff ordered to return home. Mexico has yet to announce whether it will reciprocate the withdrawal.

Analysts say the breakdown in relations reflects growing political divisions across Latin America, where left-leaning and conservative governments continue to clash over leadership changes and regional influence.

This marks the lowest point in Peru–Mexico relations in recent years, with both sides insisting they acted in defense of their national principles and sovereignty. Observers warn the fallout could impact regional cooperation efforts.
