Pakistan offers Bangladesh access to Karachi Port for regional trade

Pakistan has offered Bangladesh access to the Karachi Port to strengthen trade connectivity and regional cooperation.

The offer was made during the 9th Pakistan-Bangladesh Joint Economic Commission (JEC) meeting held in Dhaka — the first such gathering in nearly two decades.

Officials said the proposal would allow Bangladesh to use Karachi as a key maritime route for trade with China, Central Asia, and the Middle East. The move aims to promote stronger economic ties and help both countries benefit from expanding regional trade networks.

During the meeting, both nations also discussed enhancing cooperation in shipping, aviation, and education. Pakistan offered 500 fully-funded scholarships for Bangladeshi students and agreed to boost collaboration in halal certification and testing standards.

Efforts to establish direct flights between Islamabad and Dhaka were also discussed.

The step is being viewed as a significant diplomatic gesture that could pave the way for closer Pakistan-Bangladesh relations and greater South Asian economic integration.
