Pakistan Courts US With Proposal For New Arabian Sea Port, FT Reports

Advisers to Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, have approached US officials with a proposal to build and operate a new Arabian Sea Port, the Financial Times reported on Friday. The plan envisions American investors constructing a terminal in Pasni to access Pakistan’s critical mineral resources.

Pasni is a port town located in Gwadar District, Balochistan, bordering Afghanistan and Iran. The proposal comes after a September White House meeting where Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met US President Donald Trump. During the meeting, Sharif invited US companies to invest in Pakistan’s agriculture, technology, mining, and energy sectors.

According to the FT report, the offer was shared with select US officials ahead of a follow-up meeting between Munir and Trump. The plan explicitly excludes using the port for US military bases. Instead, it focuses on attracting development financing for a rail network linking the Arabian Sea Port to mineral-rich provinces in western Pakistan.

The Financial Times report has not been independently verified. The US State Department, White House, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Pakistani Army did not immediately comment on the proposal.

Analysts note that the new Arabian Sea Port could provide a strategic gateway for US investment in Pakistan’s mineral sector. It could strengthen economic ties between the two countries while boosting regional trade. The port would also support infrastructure development in underdeveloped areas of Balochistan, potentially creating jobs and fostering economic growth.

If implemented, the port project may enhance Pakistan’s connectivity with global markets and attract further foreign capital. Experts say careful planning and coordination will be crucial to ensure the port serves commercial purposes and not military operations.
