The 2025 Asia Cup trophy controversy has created a political crisis within the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). India is reportedly preparing a no-confidence motion against ACC President Mohsin Naqvi.
The dispute began after India defeated Pakistan in the final but refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi. The silverware remains locked at ACC headquarters in Dubai. The Indian team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, left the presentation ceremony without collecting it.
Naqvi, who also heads the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), said he was ready to present the trophy. However, he insisted that India must collect it formally. Claims that he apologized to the BCCI were strongly denied. He called the reports “fabricated nonsense” and “cheap propaganda.”
Sources indicate the BCCI is lobbying other ACC members for a no-confidence motion. If successful, Naqvi could be removed from office. Sri Lanka is reportedly supporting India, while Bangladesh has sided with Pakistan. Afghanistan has not taken a clear stance, making its vote crucial.
Naqvi addressed the issue on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Indian media thrives on lies, not facts. I have never apologized to the BCCI nor will I ever do so. India may collect the trophy from the ACC office if they wish.”
The incident has further strained India-Pakistan cricket relations. Earlier in the tournament, Indian players avoided shaking hands with Pakistani counterparts. The captains also skipped a pre-final photo opportunity.
During a recent ACC meeting, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla reportedly demanded the trophy be handed directly to India. Naqvi refused, noting that the matter was not on the agenda.
The controversy has left the ACC divided and raised questions about the council’s leadership and unity. The situation remains tense as member nations prepare to take sides on the potential no-confidence motion.
