Hamas Condemns Israel Flotilla Raid As ‘Act Of Piracy And Terrorism’

Hamas has strongly condemned Israel’s interception of the Gaza aid flotilla, calling it an act of “piracy and maritime terrorism.” The raid, carried out in international waters, has sparked global protests as journalists and activists remain detained.

In an official statement, Hamas accused Israeli forces of committing a “treacherous act of aggression” by stopping the Global Samoud Flotilla. The group said the raid targeted civilians on a humanitarian mission, describing it as a “crime against humanity.” Hamas urged the United Nations and the international community to protect aid convoys.

The flotilla began its journey from Spain on August 31, joined by ships from multiple countries. Organizers reported nearly 500 people aboard dozens of vessels when Israeli naval forces intercepted 13 ships about 90 nautical miles from Gaza. Over 200 activists were detained, including 30 from Spain, 22 from Italy, 21 from Türkiye, and 12 from Malaysia.

The interception prompted widespread protests. Demonstrations occurred in Mexico City, Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Madrid, and Berlin, with crowds expressing solidarity with Gaza. In Argentina, protesters demanded the release of legislator-elect Celeste Fierro, detained during the raid. Similar rallies took place in Belgium, Greece, Tunisia, Türkiye, and Germany.

Despite the arrests, flotilla organizers vowed to continue their mission to deliver humanitarian aid. About 30 vessels reportedly evaded Israeli forces and remain on course, around 85 kilometers from Gaza. Organizers said participants remain determined and motivated to complete their mission.

Hamas’ statement and the ongoing international protests highlight rising tensions over the Gaza blockade. The group emphasized that humanitarian missions must be protected, and the global community has a responsibility to ensure aid reaches civilians safely.

The raid and its aftermath underline the challenges of delivering humanitarian support in the region and the continuing conflict between Israel and Gaza-based groups.
