A family court in Bhopal is hearing an unusual divorce case where a couple, married less than a year ago, is seeking separation because their dog and cat cannot get along.
The couple, who wed in December 2024, went through mandatory counselling before filing for divorce. The husband, an IT professional, and the wife, originally from Uttar Pradesh and working in Bhopal, had bonded over their love for animals before marriage. However, their pets have now become the cause of conflict.
During counselling, the wife alleged that her husband’s dog constantly disturbs and even attacks her cat, leaving it anxious and sometimes refusing to eat. She described the environment as “unbearable.” The husband countered that they had agreed she would not bring all her pets into their marital home, yet she brought her cat, which, he claims, has also attacked the dog and causes problems near the household aquarium.
Despite multiple mediation attempts, neither partner is willing to part with their pet. Families have intervened, but the dispute remains unresolved.
Counsellor Shail Awasthi noted the case reflects rising emotional dependence on pets, where couples prioritize animals over relationships, often leading to irreconcilable marital breakdowns.
