FBR Clarifies Rumours on Extension of Income Tax Filing Deadline

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has denied rumors on social and mainstream media about an extension in the Income Tax Return filing deadline for Tax Year 2025.

In its statement, the FBR confirmed that the deadline will remain September 30, 2025, and no extension will be granted. It termed the circulating reports as “false and misleading,” dismissing claims that the date change was linked to recent floods. Officials emphasized that most taxpayers are not affected by floods and have had sufficient time to meet their obligations.

The FBR also rejected allegations of slow performance in its IRIS online portal, clarifying that the system is fully functional and supports filing through a simplified return form.

Taxpayers were warned that failing to meet the deadline will result in penalties and late-filer status. However, the FBR noted that in cases of severe hardship, individuals may apply for up to a 15-day extension—subject to payment of due taxes by September 30 and approval by the designated committee in line with legal provisions.
