Pakistan is witnessing a steady rise in divorce rate, fueled by social pressures, economic challenges, and urban lifestyle changes. Experts say the trend is more noticeable in cities where education and financial independence allow individuals to make marital decisions freely.
Punjab has reported a 34% increase in divorce cases over the past five years. In Rawalpindi, district courts registered nearly 4,980 divorce petitions this year, including 1,170 khula cases filed by women. Many cases involve spouses living abroad, while others cite poor communication, lack of tolerance, and extramarital affairs as major causes.
In rural areas, divorce rates remain comparatively lower. Social norms and financial dependence often compel women to stay in marriages they cannot end. In contrast, urban couples are more likely to pursue divorce when facing conflicts due to greater exposure and independence. Surveys suggest that over 85% of marriages in Pakistan are arranged, with only about 5% based on personal choice.
Globally, Pakistan’s divorce rate is still lower than in many countries. India reports a rate of just 0.1%, while countries like the Maldives, Russia, and Northern European nations have significantly higher rates. Factors such as accessible divorce procedures and cultural acceptance contribute to these differences.
In Sindh, divorce cases reportedly surged by 700% in 2020, highlighting the growing social concern. Experts emphasize that women’s economic independence is a key factor in both the rise and potential management of divorce rates.
Analysts argue that improving women’s social and financial empowerment can help stabilize marriages. Increasing awareness about marital responsibilities and providing counseling services are also recommended measures to address the rising divorce rate.
As divorce cases continue to grow across Pakistan, authorities and social organizations are urged to support initiatives that promote family stability while respecting individual rights.
