US President Donald Trump will host Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the White House on Thursday, weeks after Washington and Islamabad sealed a major trade deal. Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir will also join the high-level talks, which will cover global and regional issues.
The meeting follows an informal exchange between Trump and Sharif a day earlier and comes as US-India ties face strain over tariffs, visas, and Trump’s claim of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Relations between Washington and Islamabad have warmed under Trump, with Pakistan supporting his Nobel Peace Prize nomination for easing regional tensions. Earlier this year, the US and Pakistan announced a trade pact with a 19% tariff, while India continues to recalibrate ties with China amid friction with Washington.
Notably, Trump also hosted Field Marshal Munir separately—the first US president to receive Pakistan’s army chief at the White House without senior civilian officials present
