Nvidia has unveiled plans to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, as part of a major strategic partnership. The deal will see Nvidia provide high-performance chips and fund data centers to build next-generation AI infrastructure for OpenAI.
CEO Jensen Huang called the move a “leap forward” in advancing intelligence, while OpenAI leaders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman highlighted the long-standing collaboration between the two firms. Partners including Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and Stargate are also on board to develop advanced AI systems.
The announcement comes amid Nvidia’s wider global investments and rising competition from China’s AI sector, particularly after DeepSeek-R1’s emergence. Nvidia also faces regulatory hurdles, with China restricting chip sales and the U.S. imposing revenue-based fees for export licenses.
OpenAI, now boasting over 700 million weekly active users, said the deal will accelerate progress toward artificial general intelligence. Nvidia’s stock rose 4% following the news.
