Punjab Floods Ravage 2.2M Acres Of Crops, Rice Suffers Major Loss

The devastating Punjab Floods of 2025 have caused massive damage to Pakistan’s agricultural sector. More than 2.2 million acres of farmland are underwater, leaving farmers across the province in crisis.

Rice has taken the hardest hit, with over 1 million acres of standing crops destroyed. Sugarcane has also suffered, with damages reported on nearly 2.5 million acres. Corn and cotton fields in multiple districts have been badly affected as well.

Officials confirmed that the federal government has been briefed on the worsening situation. Relief measures are under consideration, including tax and irrigation fee waivers for farmers in districts such as Hafizabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Gujarat, and Multan.

Unlike Punjab, Sindh has seen limited damage so far. Only three percent of the onion crop has been destroyed. Most floodwaters have stayed within riverbanks, sparing the wider agricultural belt. The impact has been largely confined to the Kachha areas.

To assess the full scale of losses, the federal government has sought help from international organizations. UN agencies and the World Bank are already monitoring the disaster. Consultations are underway to identify recovery measures and ensure transparent reporting.

Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal chaired a high-level meeting with the finance minister and NDMA officials. He said an initial assessment of losses would be ready within ten days. Final figures, however, will only be possible once the floodwaters completely recede.

Iqbal also warned that climate change continues to make Pakistan vulnerable to natural disasters like floods and droughts. He noted that international partners, as in the 2022 floods, will assist in ensuring credible and accurate damage evaluations.

The Punjab Floods highlight the urgent need for stronger disaster management and climate resilience in Pakistan’s agricultural sector.
