Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Sardar Sarfaraz Dogar has clarified his remarks about lawyer and activist Imaan Mazari, saying his words were misinterpreted and circulated out of context.
During a recent court hearing, the IHC Chief Justice explained that he never said he would “catch” Imaan Mazari. Instead, he stressed that his remarks were made in his role as a judge and as an elder.
“Imaan Mazari is like my daughters. I was guiding her during the proceedings as the chief justice and as an elder,” he stated. Justice Dogar noted that his comments were spread on social media in a misleading way, creating unnecessary controversy.
He added that his remarks were directed towards Mazari’s husband, Hadi Chattha, who was present in court. “I told him to take hold of her, otherwise I will take contempt action,” he said.
The IHC Chief Justice further explained that he avoided contempt of court proceedings against Mazari because such action could damage her career. “If contempt is taken, the girl’s career will be ruined. My intent was to advise, not to threaten,” he emphasized.
Justice Dogar also pointed out that fundamental rights apply to everyone, including the judiciary itself. “I explained to her like a child, but she was not understanding,” he said, referring to Mazari’s repeated arguments on fundamental rights.
He concluded that his clarification was necessary to stop the spread of false impressions. The IHC Chief Justice reiterated that his comments were wrongly interpreted and stressed that the judiciary remains committed to fairness and respect for all parties.
