In a fresh setback for solar power users, the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has directed that applicants for net metering connections must now pay for Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters themselves.
The new policy, introduced under instructions from the Federal Minister for Energy, has been implemented across all IESCO offices down to the sub-divisional level. Demand notices for both net metering and distributed generation (DG) setups will now include additional meter charges.
Officials claim the move will strengthen monitoring, close loopholes, and enhance renewable energy integration into the national grid. However, consumers see it as another financial burden at a time of skyrocketing electricity bills.
Critics argue that while AMI meters may improve transparency and efficiency, shifting the cost to citizens will discourage investment in solar energy. Many fear this policy could undermine efforts to promote greener and more affordable alternatives.
With rising power tariffs and ongoing load management issues, the decision has sparked concern among households and businesses relying on solar as relief from costly electricity.
