Over 1,000 Transgenders Receive Training Under Punjab Skills Programme

Over 1,000 transgenders in Punjab have received vocational training under the Pehchan programme, launched in November 2024. This initiative is part of the Chief Minister’s Skilled Punjab Initiative.

According to the Punjab Skills Development Fund (PSDF), 1,054 transgenders completed courses in fields including beauty and grooming, culinary arts, performing arts, information technology, handicrafts, and digital freelancing.

More than 980 participants have already secured jobs with established organisations. Others have started small businesses in cities like Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, and Gujranwala.

The programme works with over 18 training providers. It provides technical training, stipends, travel allowances, professional toolkits, and support for official documentation. This ensures transgenders can fully participate in the workforce.

Officials describe Pehchan as Punjab’s first dedicated skills programme for transgenders. Its main goal is to promote economic participation and social inclusion among marginalized communities.

The initiative not only equips transgenders with practical skills but also opens pathways to entrepreneurship and sustainable employment. Many participants have expressed satisfaction with the training and support they received.

By targeting skill development, the programme aims to reduce economic disparities for transgenders in Punjab. It also helps create awareness about inclusion and diversity in workplaces across the province.

The success of the Pehchan programme highlights the government’s commitment to empowering transgenders. It provides them with equal opportunities to contribute to Punjab’s economy and society.

With this initiative, transgenders in Punjab now have better chances to achieve financial independence and social recognition. The programme sets a model for future inclusion-focused skills initiatives in Pakistan.
