PDMA Issues Alert Over New Flood Risk From India

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has cautioned Punjab about a fresh flood threat, as over 70,000 cusecs of water are set to flow in from India in the coming days.

At a press conference in Lahore, PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia said heavy rains have worsened conditions, with Gujrat and Mandi Bahauddin recording the highest rainfall in 24 hours. He noted that while water levels at Ganda Singh Wala eased after a dam breach in India, high flood levels continue at Head Sulemanki and Head Islam.

Inflows at Head Marala have hit 175,000 cusecs, while Head Trimu faces an incoming wave of about 830,000 cusecs. Water levels in the Ravi and Sutlej are also rising, threatening downstream districts. At Head Muhammad Wala, flows between 700,000–800,000 cusecs could force controlled breaches to protect major cities.

Kathia said unprecedented safety measures are underway, with over 800 boats, 13,000 rescuers, and army support deployed. So far, floods have affected 966,000 along the Chenab, 232,000 near the Ravi, and 313,000 around the Sutlej. Relief camps are operational, sheltering thousands, including 6,000–7,000 in Lahore. At least 30 deaths, mostly accidental, have been reported.

The DG also criticized India’s lack of advance warnings on water releases, stressing that Pakistan is left unprepared. He added that rehabilitation will follow once rescue operations conclude.
