Punjab is battling severe flooding after heavy monsoon rains and water released from Indian dams swelled the Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers. Amid the crisis, rumors spread that sections of the Motorway had been shut down for commuter safety.
The National Highways Authority (NHA), however, strongly dismissed these claims, confirming that all motorways across Pakistan remain fully open and safe. “Traffic is moving smoothly, and no motorway is flooded or blocked,” an NHA spokesperson clarified, urging people not to believe false reports.
To ensure smooth operations, NHA has set up a 24/7 control room, with its chairman personally supervising activities on the ground.
Meanwhile, authorities have evacuated more than 32,500 people from flood-prone riverbank areas, with army units deployed in eight districts for rescue and relief work. The Chenab at Qadirabad and Khanki, Ravi at Jassar, and Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala are facing exceptionally high floods. Sialkot recorded 363.5mm of rainfall — the heaviest in 49 years — with more rain forecast across Punjab.
The PMD has warned of continued very high flood levels, while water will gradually move downstream into Sindh. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed ministers to oversee relief operations, as donors and aid groups pledge support for victims.
