The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in multiple cases related to the May 9 riots. These cases arose from protests and attacks on government and military buildings earlier this year.
The court recently reformed the bench handling Imran Khan’s bail applications. Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi replaced Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb. Chief Justice Yahya Afridi now leads the three-member panel, which also includes Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui.
This new bench is expected to continue hearings on Imran Khan’s bail requests soon.
At the previous hearing on August 12, the Supreme Court questioned the Lahore High Court’s decision to deny bail to Khan. Chief Justice Afridi said issuing final judgments at the bail stage might affect the fairness of the trial.
The Supreme Court asked lawyers on both sides to prepare detailed arguments for the next session. This approach ensures the court makes a balanced decision based on key legal points.
Separately, an Islamabad court rejected prosecution pleas to place PTI workers under physical remand in cases registered at Margalla and I-9 police stations. The judge upheld judicial custody for the accused, noting the FIRs were filed by unrelated individuals. A total of 63 PTI workers face charges in these cases.
The Supreme Court’s decision to grant bail is a significant step in the ongoing legal proceedings related to the May 9 unrest. It highlights the court’s careful approach to ensuring justice and fairness during the trial process.
As the Supreme Court continues to hear the cases, more updates are expected on Imran Khan’s legal status and the progress of related cases. The court’s rulings will be closely watched by political and legal observers nationwide.
