England’s Joe Root believes his 158-Test career has prepared him better than ever to break England’s long Ashes win drought in Australia.
Root, now second on the all-time Test run-scorer list with 13,543 runs — behind only Sachin Tendulkar’s 15,921 — reached the milestone during the recent 2-2 series draw against India.
Despite his prolific record, the 34-year-old has never scored a century or won a Test in Australia, averaging 35.68 from 27 innings with nine fifties.
Reflecting on past tours, Root said experience would be key: “Having played in Australia a couple of times before, now going with 150-plus Test caps under my belt, I feel I couldn’t be more ready. I probably wanted that century too much in the past, which distracted me from what mattered most.”
