A pair of rhinestone-covered socks worn by Michael Jackson sold for more than $8,000 in an auction in Nîmes, France. The socks were part of his 1997 HIStory World Tour performance.
The white socks, decorated with rhinestones, were found by a backstage technician after the concert. They had been kept in a framed display for 28 years.
Auction house Aurore Illy said the socks have great historical and emotional value for Michael Jackson fans. The socks were worn during the iconic performance of “Billie Jean,” where Jackson performed his famous Moonwalk dance.
The socks were expected to fetch between 3,000 and 4,000 euros (about $3,400 to $4,500). However, they sold for 7,688 euros, roughly $8,822, nearly triple the estimate.
This sale adds to a growing collection of Michael Jackson memorabilia fetching high prices worldwide. For instance, his glittery glove from the first Moonwalk performance sold for $350,000 in Macau.
Other items such as a hat worn before the Moonwalk and a leather jacket from a Pepsi commercial have sold for over $80,000 and $300,000 respectively.
Despite ongoing controversies about Michael Jackson’s life, his personal items remain highly sought after. The pop icon passed away in 2009, but his legacy continues to attract collectors and fans alike.
This auction shows the lasting impact of Michael Jackson on music and pop culture. His unique style and performances are remembered through these valuable artifacts.
