Former U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Israel to escalate its military action in Gaza. His remarks signal a clear change in tone after previously supporting a possible ceasefire with Hamas.
Speaking before a weekend trip to Scotland, Trump told reporters that it was time for Israel to “finish the job.” He criticized Hamas for avoiding peace talks and claimed the group was not serious about a deal.
“I think they want to die,” Trump said, referring to the militant group’s role in blocking negotiations. “You’re gonna have to finish the job.”
Trump’s comments come amid growing international concern over Gaza’s worsening humanitarian situation. The United Nations has warned of rising starvation and described civilians as “walking corpses.”
Despite global appeals for restraint, Trump appears to support continued Israeli military action. The Gaza offensive is now entering its 21st month.
Earlier this week, Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, pulled out of ceasefire talks in Doha. The U.S. cited concerns over Hamas’ sincerity and coordination during the negotiations.
Witkoff said the U.S. is now looking for other ways to secure the release of remaining hostages. The sudden shift in U.S. policy has raised questions among international mediators, especially in Qatar and Egypt.
One source close to the talks described the change as “an earthquake.” However, both Qatar and Egypt downplayed the pause, calling it normal for such complex talks.
Israeli officials have also denied that talks have collapsed. They say progress is still possible if Hamas becomes more realistic.
Trump blamed Hamas for losing leverage in the talks, especially after some hostages were released or killed. He also expressed frustration with Israeli leadership, calling recent talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “disappointing.”
Despite the setbacks, some U.S. officials remain hopeful that pressure will bring results. Trump continues to stand by a tougher approach, indicating military pressure may now be the preferred strategy
