In a major step toward curriculum reform, Punjab has launched a single mathematics textbook for all Class 9 students. This move will now bring both Arts and Science groups under one unified math syllabus.
The Punjab Education, Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority (PECTA) confirmed the change. Officials have directed all schools in the province to begin using the new textbook starting this academic year. The previous general science book for Arts students has been discontinued.
This decision means that students in the Arts group will now study the same mathematics course as those in the Science group. According to education experts, the new textbook has been carefully designed to be clear, easy to understand, and suitable for all students.
The updated curriculum aims to reduce confusion and promote equality in education. It also ensures that all ninth-grade students in Punjab are given the same learning standards, regardless of their group selection.
PECTA officials stated that the single-book approach will also make teacher training and resource distribution easier. Schools will no longer need to manage multiple sets of books for one subject. This will help in saving costs and improving teaching quality across the province.
Some teachers and education analysts welcomed the move, saying it could help improve numeracy skills in Arts students. Others have suggested regular review and support for both students and teachers to ensure the smooth adoption of the new content.
The unified mathematics book is now part of the official curriculum in Punjab and must be followed by both public and private schools. The change is part of broader education reforms aimed at making learning more inclusive and efficient.
With this step, Punjab has taken a strong initiative to streamline education and bridge gaps between different academic groups.
