Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has died in a car crash in Spain, according to the Portuguese Football Federation. He was 28 years old.
The tragic accident occurred shortly after midnight near Zamora in northwestern Spain. Diogo Jota was traveling with his younger brother, André Silva, when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames. Emergency services found both men dead at the scene.
Local police said they could not yet officially confirm the identities, but all evidence pointed to Diogo Jota and his 26-year-old brother. Their bodies have been transferred to a forensics unit in Zamora, where autopsies will be conducted.
Jota had recently married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 28. The couple shared three young children. His sudden death has shocked fans and fellow players around the world.
Diogo Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020. Since then, he became a key part of the squad, scoring 65 goals in 182 matches. He helped the club win the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup.
At the international level, Jota made 49 appearances for the Portuguese national team. He won the UEFA Nations League twice, in 2019 and again in 2025.
In a statement, the Portuguese Football Federation said, “We have lost two champions. Their deaths are a great loss to Portuguese football and to the entire community.”
Liverpool Football Club also released a statement expressing deep sadness. The club asked for privacy for the family during this incredibly difficult time.
