Meta Introduces AI Chat Summaries on WhatsApp to Enhance User Experience

Meta has announced the rollout of a new AI-powered feature on WhatsApp that provides users with concise summaries of unread messages, aiming to simplify conversations without compromising user privacy. Named “Message Summaries,” the tool is designed to help users quickly catch up on chats they may have missed.

The summaries are generated using Meta AI and are only visible to the user — maintaining the privacy of all participants in the conversation. According to Meta, the feature is entirely optional and switched off by default. A small icon will indicate when the feature is available for activation.

Powered by Meta’s “Private Processing” technology, the AI can now access limited context from chats while preserving end-to-end encryption. This ensures that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can view message content or summaries, keeping user conversations secure.

Initially launched for English-speaking users in the United States, Meta plans to expand the feature to other regions and languages later this year. Users can activate the feature through the app’s settings under “Chats > Private Processing,” where options like message summarisation can be toggled on or off.

This development highlights Meta’s ongoing efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into its platforms responsibly, balancing innovation with the growing demand for digital privacy.
