Kyiv Suffers Deadly Overnight Barrage Amid Escalating Tensions

Russia launched a heavy overnight missile and drone assault on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, killing four people and injuring at least 20, according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks caused widespread damage, disrupted city infrastructure, and marked a sharp escalation following recent Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory.

The latest barrage comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly sent a warning, through U.S. leader Donald Trump, pledging retaliation for Ukrainian drone attacks that destroyed several strategic Russian bombers. The intensity of the response was felt across Kyiv, where powerful blasts shook buildings and sent residents scrambling for shelter.

One of the most severe incidents occurred in the Solomianskyi district, where a drone struck an apartment building, leaving a gaping hole in its side and setting off fires. Falling debris crushed cars, while investigators examined what appeared to be drone engine remains at the site. Residents described a terrifying night, with the sounds of kamikaze drones overhead and air defense systems firing in response.

The city’s metro service was temporarily halted due to a strike that damaged railway tracks, and Ukraine’s national rail company rerouted trains to ensure passenger safety. Underground shelters, including parking garages and metro stations, were again used by citizens seeking refuge during the attacks.

This latest escalation underscores the growing volatility in the war, with both sides now targeting deeper into each other’s territory, and civilians increasingly caught in the crossfire.
