Over 200 Inmates Escape Malir Jail, Sindh Govt Suspends Top Officials

The Sindh government has suspended top prison officials, including the DIG Jails and Malir Jail Superintendent, following a mass jailbreak in Karachi where 216 inmates escaped from Malir Jail. The Inspector General of Jails Sindh has also been relieved of duty as the province reels from one of the most serious prison security breaches in recent years.

Senior minister Sharjeel Memon revealed that after a preliminary inquiry, 138 inmates remain at large. He announced that fugitives who surrender within 24 hours will be dealt with leniently, while those who fail to return will face strict action under jailbreak laws, including a potential seven-year prison sentence.

According to the inquiry report, the chaos erupted at 12:05 AM when prisoners began rioting and vandalizing multiple sections of the facility. Significant damage was caused in Circles 2, 4, and 5, with inmates breaking doors and destroying infrastructure. Sensitive areas, including the E-Court and CPLC offices, were also ransacked.

By 1:00 AM, over 200 prisoners had escaped. So far, 78 have been re-arrested. Twelve inmates sustained injuries and one, Tahir Khan, was killed while trying to flee. The incident has raised urgent concerns about prison management and security protocols in Sindh.
